GIANT PAPILLARY CONJUNCTIVITIS DUE TO CONTACT LENS WEAR AND ITS TREATMENT
In the Department of Ophthalmology, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, from January 1990 to April 1992, 64 patients, who were
using various types of lenses, were diagnosed "Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis". The relationships between contact lens history,
treatment regimens and clinical responses were studied. The highest percentage of this disease was diagnosed in patients using
extended wear soft lens (64.07%) whereas the lowest percent was in patients wearing hard lens (PMMA) (9.37%). Duration of
lens wear before the onset of disease was 12.55±10.75 months in those using extended soft lenses and 54.00±68.52 months in
those using PMMA lenses. For those patients only 39 of them were treated and followed up for at least 3 months. They were
studied in two groups. The first group included 27 patients, these patients discontinued the lens and used cromolyn sodium 2%.
The second group included 12 patients that continued to use lenses and medicine at the same time. In the first group, the total
resolution of the symptoms took 9.68±7.45 months whereas it was 16.33+8.50 months in the second group. When the percentages
of total resolution cases were evaluated it was higher in the first group by 40.7% whereas it was 25% in the second group.
The rate of partial resolution in first group was 40.7% and 33.3% in second group. [Ophthalmology 1992; 1(4):332-335]
