In order to determine the place of trace elements in the development of diabetic retinopathy, in one hundred fourty diabetic patients
serum magnesium, zinc and copper levels were measured and compared to those of control group including sixty persons
with similar age and sex. In eighty diabetic patients without retinopathy and sixty with retinopathy, decrease in serum magnesium
level was significant (p<0.05). It was noted that decreased serum magnesium levels were determined by retinopathy. Although
there was no difference in three group with respect to copper levels, zinc levels were higher in patients with diabetic retinopathy
from controls (p<00.001). [Ophthalmology 1992; 1(4);312-314]Keywords: Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Trace elements, Diabetic retinopathy
