Randomised 48 patients who were admitted for intraocular lens implantation were divided into 3 equol groups. As a local anesthetic
lidocaine, bupivacaine and mixture of lidocaine and bupivacaine (50/50 volumetric) were used. Lidocaine provided good ocular
akinesia at operation (mean 7.6 min), but pain relief was short lived (56.25%) complained of pain in early postoperative period.
Bupivacaine did not give absolute ocular akinesia (37.5%) and the onset of action was slow (12.1 min.), but it provided adequate
and prolonged pain relief (12.5%). When used in combination, the avarage time of adequate akinesia was 10.1 min., postoperative
pain was less (25.0%), when compared with the usage of lidocaine alone. The mixture of two local anesthetics in equal
volumes eliminated the disadvantages of their individual use. Keywords: Ophthalmic surgery. Ocular akinesia. Bupivacaine, Lidocaine
