THE EFFECT OF TIMOLOL MALEAT ON CONJUNCTIVAL CYTOLOGY AND TEAR FILM FUNCTIONS
On 47 eyes of 25 primary open-angle glaucoma patients who were on topical timolol maleat therapy Schirmer's I test and tear
film break up time were performed. By the conjunctival impression cytology technique goblet cells of the upper bulbar conjunctiva
were counted and conjunctival epithelial cells were investigated. The results were compared with those of the control group of the
similar age. No statistically significant difference was found between the Schirmer's test results of the patients of and the control
group, but the tear film break up time was 8.334 sec. in patients and 13.580 sec. in the control group; Goblet cells were
60.12/mm2 in patients and 80.12/mm2 in the control group. Squamous metaplasia was present in 10 eyes of 5 patients and only
