IN AN EXPERIMENTAL UVEITIS MODEL
We evaluated the value of Tc-99m glucoheptonate (GHA) scintigraphy in the quantification of experimental ocular inflammation
and investigated its use in human applications. We correlated the scintigraphically determined Inflammation Reaction Index (IRI)
and Eye-Scalp Index (ESI) with clinically determined Inflammation Reaction Scores (IRS) in the left eyes of 10 New Zealand albino
rabbits with experimentally induced primary and secondary uveitis using bovine serum albumin. A statistically significant correlation
between the IRI and IRS values were obtained in primary uveitis (v0.84). High IRI values were observed in secondary
uveitis due to the breakdown of the blood-aqueous and/or blood-retinal barriers (r=0.43). ESI values of the left eyes with experimentally
induced uveitis were statistically different from those of the normal right eyes (p<0.05), but, the ESI values of the left
eyes between primary and secondary uveitis were not significant (p>0.05). We concluded that Tc-99m GHA scintigraphy was an
objective, practical and non-invasive method that could be used in following the response to anti-inflammatory drugs in experimentally
induced uveitis, in determining the changes of blood-aqueous and/or blood-retinal barriers and in the evaluation and quantification
of inflammatory ocular diseases behind opacified optical systems. Keywords: Experimental uveitis, Tc-99m GHA scintigraphy, Inflammation reaction index (IRI), Inflammation reaction score (IRS), Eye-scalp index (ESI)
