In 1990, Fuller and Hutton reported that visually evoked response (VER) recorded at 10.20 and 30 Hz. flash stimulation had
predictive value in visual prognosis of severe eye trauma. They also showed macular and/or optic nerve dysfunction behind opaque
media can be predicted accurately.
In this stud'; the predictive value of this test for visual prognosis and the existence of macular and/or optic nerve disorders
were evaluated in patients with cataract.
3 macular lesion cases and 2 optic nerve disorders were predicted accurately. False positive responses were obtained from
2 patients, one with senile macular degeneration, and the other with macular hole. Of 31 patients with normal VER recorded
preoperatively 24 (%73) were of visual acuity of 0.7 to 1.0.
It was determine that Flash VER recorded at 10.20 and 30 Hz. frequencies can be used for the prediction of post-cataract
visual acuity and existence of macular and/or optic nerve disorders in an eye with cataract. Keywords: Cataract, Flash visually evoked response (Flash VER), Visual prognosis, Macular dysfunction, Optic nerve dysfunction.
