We retrospectively investigated 1380 eyes of 1311 patients, who had undergone extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular
lens implantation, considering the relation ship between vitreus loss and retinal detachment. The mean follow-up time was 27.3
months (min. 13 months-max.48 months). Retinal detachment occured in 7 of 1234 noncomplicated eyes (% 0.56) and 16 of 146
complicated eyes (% 11.6) which have had vitreus loss after posterior capsular or zonular rupture. The time between cataract surgery
and the diagnosis of retinal detachment was approximately 10.7 months (min.3 weeks-max.367 months). In the group of
complicated eyes, two of 56 eyes (% 3.5) with posterior chamber implant, and 15 of 90 eyes (% 16.6) with anterior chamber
implant developed retinal detachment. It can be concluded that the incidence of retinal detachment was increased about 20
times by vitreus loss due to posterior capsular or zonular rupture during extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens
implantation. [Oftalmoloji 1993; 2(2): 204-206]Keywords: Pseudophakia, vitreus loss, retinal detachment
