Panretinal photocoagulation was simulated in 6 eyes of 3 Chichilla rabbits to evaluate the relative hazards of dye (577 and 630
nm.), argon (514,5 nm) and diode (810 nm) lasers in the generation of thermal nerve fiber injury. At four weeks after photocoagulation,
localized defects of axons and degenerating figures of myelin were detected on the projections of the corresponding
retinal areas where significant inner cell damage had developed. Loss of axons with relatively larger diameters and replacement
of neural tissue with the overgrown fibrous astrocytes were noticed at the end of the eighth week. Retinal surface temperatures,
calculated by a computerized thermal simulation model, revealed the fact that the heat created was enough to cause the irreversible
damage at the level of the ganglion cell. [Oftalmoloji 1993; 2(1):97-103]Keywords: Laser photocoagulation, Diode laser, Optic nerve, Retinal nerve fiber layer, Computerized analysis
