Due to the increase in average life span of middle-aged population, Age-Related Macular Degeneration increasingly
appears to be a serious problem concerning vision especially for these individuals. Particularly in neovascular from, loss
of vision becomes manifest immediately thus, diagnose and treatment should at once be established.
Interferon a-2b is a frequently pronounciated medication and this drug is advised for neovascular form of AMD
concerning its inhibitory effect on membrane proliferation. There is not adequate study concerning this medication yet.
However, this drug was utilised for the treatment of neovascular form of AMD on 28 eyes of 18 patients in our
department and the results were evaluated with vision acuity, central 30° threshold field master, 100 Hue Color
Discrimination Test and FFA. On evaluation of the data, membrane proliferation appears to pause for a while in this form
of the disorder, but it seems to recur with the cessation of treatment. Follow up period that persisted for average 7.5
months was terminated with laser photocoagulation for all patients except one. One of the patients was excluded from
the study due to loss of cooperation during the follow up period.
Although it appears as an efficient alternative therapy for preventing neovascular evolvement during utilization of
Interferon tx-2b, progression of the disorder proceeds and laser therapy becomes an obligation following the cessation of
the drug. Conclusively; despite it seems to be an efficient therapy for the future, in accordance with our study it is
unsuitable alternative for laser therapy yet. Keywords: Age-related macular degeneration, Interferon o-2b, 100 Hue Color Discrimination test, Vision field
