A personel computer based mathematic3al simulation model has been developed which permits one to predict the
extent and the linear thermal damage caused by various lasers during the retinal photocoagulation. This model can
calculate the spatial and temporal variations of the heat gain and the thermal damage integrals in the retina of human
and pigmented chinchilla rabbits. The difference in optical and anatomical features of human and rabbit eyes, and laser
exposure parameters, such as exposure time, power, emission wavelength and spot size, are also taken in regard
during the calculations. Knowledge of the temperature and the temperature dependent damage integral as a function of
position and time will allow the formulation of rules for optimal photocoagulation efficiency, and also will aid in comparing
the relative effects of various different lasers with different wavelengths. Furthermore, this model may also allow an
experimental media to extrapolate the hazards of intense light irradiation from various sources that have not been
investigated experimentally and through which it will also be possible to set up safety standards to different spectral
emissions. Keywords: Laser photocoagulation, Retinal thermal damage, Computerised model
