Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) still remains to be one of the Important problems in cataract surgery. For
evaluating the role of posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation site and PC-IOL design in posterior
capsule opacification, we retrospectively reviewed 271 cases of extracapsular cataract extraction with PC-IOL All
patients had senile cataract and none of them had any systemic disease. Surgery was done by the same surgeon. 171
PC-IOLs were sulcus-fixated and 100 PC-IOLs were implanted In the bag. 53 PC-IOL, which were Implanted in the bag,
had haptics and 47 PC-IOL were without haptlcs (disc type). After 33 months of follow-up, posterior capsule opacification
developed in 25.1 % of patients. PCO developed less frequently In eyes with capsular bag PC-IOL and PCO developed
more in eyes with disc type PC-IOL. Them was a statistically significant difference between groups (p<0.001). We
concluded that, "in the bag" implantation of PC-IOL develops lesser PCO than sulcus fixation; and "in the bag" implantation
of a PC-IOL without haptics (disc type) develops more PCO than PC-IOL with haptics. Keywords: Posterior capsule opacification, PC-IOL design
