A number of reports have suggested a relationship between the antioxidant status and some age-related eye
diseases such as senile cataracts and senile macular degeneration. In the present study, the possible relationship
between blood levels of antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and glutathione peroxidase and these diseases were
investigated. Fasting bloods were obtained from 25 patients with senile cataract, and 15 patients with senile macular
degeneration, and 10 healthy age and sex matched controls. These blood samples were assayed for vitamin E, vitamin
C, and glutathione peroxidase. Statistical analyses using student t test revealed no significant difference in blood levels
of glutathione peroxidase between subjects and controls (p>0.05). In contrary, a statistically significant association
between senile cataract and senile macular degeneration and vitamin E and vitamin C levels (p<0.05) was found. These
results suggest that oxidative damage is an important factor in the pathogenesis of senile cataract and senile macular
degeneration. However, further research is necessary to clarify the possible use of vitamin supplements in the prevention
of these potentially blinding diseases. Keywords: Cataract, Senile macular degeneration, Glutathione peroxidase, Vitamine E, Vitamine C
