OF PROLIFERATIVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Levels of human growth hormone (GH) were estimated in the sera of 30 diabetic patients with or without proliferatif
diabetic retinopathy by using the technique of "Euro DPC double antibody radioimmunoassay" to investigate whether GH
(somatotropin) plays a role or not in the development of proliferatif new vessels. The levels of GH of the patients with
proliferative diabetic retinopathy were higher than those of without proliferative retinopathy (average level 1 ng/ml versus
0.43 ng/ml). The levels of GH were proportional to the duration of diabetes and it has also been found higher levels in
men than those of women. In diabetic patients particularly those of glycemic control is poor as glucose can not been
used, the energy essential for the cells is supplied other than glucose by from the proteins and lipids (gluconeogenessis).
This situation cause increased secretion of GH.
It is asserted that the increase of GH causes to synthesis of protein and new vessel formationKeywords: Growth hormone (GH), Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
