PATIENTS WITH SENILE CATARACT
In an attempt to determine the role of trace elements in the pathogenesis of cataract, zinc and copper levels in 48
serum,, 42 lens and 10 humour aqueous samples of 48 patients with senile (nuclear and cortical) cataract were
measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the results compared with corresponding controls. Serum zinc
levels were found as increased in patients with cortical cataract compared to the controls (p<0.05). No significant
differences existed between lens or aqueous humour zinc levels of patients and controls. On the other hand, it was
found that both lens and serum copper levels were significantly increased in patients with cortical cataract when
compared to those with nuclear cataract (p<0.05). Aqueous humour copper levels did not differ significantly between
patients and controls (p>0.05).
The results obtained suggest that increased levels of zinc in the sera and copper in sera and lens cortex of patients
with cortical cataract may be related to the development of senile cataract. Keywords: Cataract, lens, aqueous humour, trace elements, zinc, copper
