Retinitis pigmentosa Is a group of inherited degenerative diseases of retina, characterised by constricted visual field
and night blindness due to dystrophy of retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells. Also retinal blood perfusion is
decreased in these patients.
In our study, peak sistolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity and resistive index values of central retinal artery, posterior
ciliary artery and ophtaimic artery and only peak sistolic velocity of central retinal vein of 10 patients with retinitis
pigmentosa and 10 control normal subjects were determined.
Between control and study groups by using student's t test, no statistically significant differences were found in
posterior ciliary artery end-diastolic velocity, ophtaimic artery peak sistolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity and resistive
index values (p>0.05) while significant decreases were found in central retinal vein peak sistolic velocity, posterior ciliary
artery peak sistolic velocity and resistive index and central retinal artery peak sistolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity and
resistive Index values (p<0.05).
As a conclusion, a significant decrease of ocular vascular perfusion and vascular resistance was found in retinitis
pigmentosa. Keywords: Color Doppler ultrasonography, Orbit, Retinitis pigmentosa
