Postoperative results of 96 eyes of 64 patients who have undergone phacoemulsification procedure are presented.
Of all eyes, 10 had congenital, 3 had traumatic and other 83 had senile cataract.
Irregular capsulorhexis in 4 (4.1%), zonular dehlssence in 3 (3.1%) posterior capsular rupture in 2 (2.0%), and iris
trauma in 2 (2.0%) eyes developed during operation. In early postoperative period temporary corneal edema developed
in 5 (5.2%) eyes and lasted one or two days. Retinal detachment developed in one patient in whom a nuclear fragmant
dropped in to the vitrous cavity during operation.
Mean phacoemulsification time was 2.5 minutes. Postoperative astigmatism was found minimal in horizontal suture
group of patients followed-up for a period of at least 3 months and maximum 8 months.
We believe that extracapsular cataract surgeon who wants to make transition to phacoemulsification must first start
with single handed and then go to bimanuel technic since the latter requires some experience in phacoemulsification. Keywords: Cataract, Bimanual phacoemulsification, Capsulorhexis, Scleral tunnel incision, Postoperative corneal astigmatism
