Medicine, Ophthalmology Department Cornea-Contact Lens Unit between 1982-1994. 84 (60%) of the cases were
women and 58 (40%) were men. Mean age was 23+7. 124 (87%) patients had bilateral and 18 (13%) patients had
unilateral keratoconus.
222 eyes in 129 of 142 patients were fit contact lenses and 21 eyes underwent partial penetran keratoplasty (PPK).
222 eyes which fit contact lenses were classified into four groups: mild keratoconus (45 D) in 11 eyes, moderate
keratoconus (46-51 D) in 125 eyes, severe keratoconus (52-59 D) in 71 eyes and more severe keratoconus (60 D and
above) in 15 eyes.
Contact lens correction was statistically superior to spectacle correction group in terms of visual acuity.
21 eyes underwent PPK for keratoconus and at the postoperative period the mean value of the corrected vision was
found to be 0.38+0.27 in follow-up of 15 months. There was no statistical difference between the visual acuities of the e
more severe keratoconus group and the PPK group but there was statistical difference between piggyback fit contact
lens group and PPK group (p<0.001).Keywords: Keratoconus, Piggyback lens, Penetrating keratoplasty
