We evaluated the tear function in 150 eyes of 75 patients with Sjogren syndrome and 50 eyes of 25 normal subjects.
We performed Schirmer I, tear film break up time (BUT), Rose bengal staining, lactoferrin and lysozyme tests in order to
compare the specifity and sensitivity of these tests. Tear film break up time was found to be the most sensitive test with a
percentage of 84.6. The sensitivity of lactoferrin (76.6%) and lysozyme (73%) tests were also found to be high. Statistical
difference was not observed between the sensitivity of these tests (p>0.05). The combination of two tests resulted with a
higher sensitivity. The sensitivity was found to be 93.6% with in the combination of BUT and lysozyme tests, 92.3% in
lactoferrin plus BUT test. The addition of a third test to this combination was not found to be effective.
We observed a high correlation between lactoferrin and lysozyme tests. But lactoferrin radial immunodiffüzyon testis
preffered because of its easy application.
We can postulate that the application of lactoferrin test in addition to the clinical tests can be a parameter for the
accurate diagnosis of dry eyes. Keywords: Sjogren syndrome, Lysozyme, Lactoferrin
