PATIENTS WITH UNILATERAL PSEUDOEXFOLIATION SYNDROME
Pseudoexfoliation syndrome, mostly accompained by glaucoma is characterized by white fibrogranular deposits and
effects the whole anterior segment. In this study corneal endothelium of the 48 eyes of 24 patients with unilateral
Pseudoexfoliation were examined and photographed by noncontact specular microscope; average cell density, maximum-
minimum cell ratio, central corneal thickness and intraocular pressures were compared and no statistically significant
difference was found. Subsequently these 24 patients were compared with an age and sex-matched control group.
Corneal thickness of the eyes with Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (0.52±0.03 mm) compared to control group (0.49±0.03
mm) were found to be increased (p-0.005) and intraocular pressures were higher (p-0.017). Similar results were
obtained with apparently normal eyes of the unilateral Pseudoexfoliation group.
This showed us that the functional effectiveness of the corneal endothelium in patients with unilateral Pseudoexfoliation
is disrupted before morphometric and morphologic changes takes place. Keywords: Corneal endothelium, Corneal thickness, Pseudoexfoliation syndrome
