AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (Preliminary Study)
Surgical removal of subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane due to age-related macular degeneration was
performed in two eyes. Large and dense submacular scar tissue, widespread retinai pigment epithelial atrophy, exudative
macular detachment and minimal hemorrhage were present in both eyes. During the vitreoretinal surgery, mild
subretinai hemorrhage developed in one eye, but it could be controlled easily. During the postoperative period no
complications developed. After the surgical removal of submacular scar tissue and macular'attachment, the size of the
central scotomas decreased ant the patients visual acuitis which were 50 cmCF preoperatively improved to 0.1. Pooling
hyperfluorescence related to choroidal neovascularization was not detected on the fluorescein angiographies during the
follow-up period. Since the follow-up periods are very short (3 and 5 months), no comment could be done in terms of the
recurrence of the neovascularization.
We have demonstrated the feasibility of vitrectomy and subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane removal in
patients with age-related macular degeneration. The complications secondary to this type of surgery are very rare and
not severe. In spite of achieving smaller central scotomas and an ambulatory vision after vitreoretinal surgery, visual
improvement is limited in cases of age-related macular degeneration because of the background pathological changes. Keywords: Vitreoretinal surgery, Age-related macular degeneration, Subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane
