SELENITE CATARACTOGENESIS AT THE ULTRASTRUCTURAL LEVEL
On the 12-14 days olds of suckling rats the nuclear cataract was occured by injections a single subcutaneous dose
of sodium selenite on the fourth day. Vitamin E and C together selenite were given another two groups rats and to it was
examined to prevent their effect to the cataract formation at the ultrastructural level. On the all of the test groups, the
cataract formation was established by biomicroscopical and histological. At the 12-24 hours after injection it was seen
that the vacuolization occured on the epithelium and equator regions of lens. After 48-72 hours, it was noted that the
vacuolization penetrated from the superficial to deep regions of cortex. At the deep region of cortex, the dejeneration on
the lens fibrils was less in the group with selenite than in that of groups of vitamin E and C.Keywords: Selenite, Cataract, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Ultrastructure
