AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ABOUT THE EFFECT OF DOXORUBICIN ON EXTRAOCULAR MUSCLE
In some cases of strabismus, weakening of the appropriate extraocular muscle with a perminant agent becomes
necessary. For this purpose the effect of doxorubicin (DXR) -an antineoplastic antibiotic- on extraocular muscle was
investigated. The hlstopathological changes In DXR injected muscles were compared with controls. It was
demonstrated that DXR caused a toxic damage in extraocular muscle, whereas atrophy was not observed. The results
of this study suggested that for the applied doses the effect of DXR was "chemomyectomy" and that higher doses for
"chemodenervation" could not be tolerated in extraocular muscle.Keywords: Chemodenervation, Chemomyectomy , Doxorubicin, Extraocular muscle
