In order to investigate the conjunctival flora of normal population living in East Anatolia, 340 eyes of 170 cases
were studied. A sterile culture swab was applied to the inferior conjunctival fornix of each eye and the specimens were
immediatly streaked on chocolate agar and blood agar plates near the patient. After the Incubation period at 37°C for
24-48 hours, Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated in 164, Staphylococcus aureus in 83, Corynebacterium spp. in
41, non-haemolytic streptoccus in 10, lactobacillus in 8, neisseria in 6, bacillus spp in 3, proteus spp in 2, fusiform
bacil 1, enterobacter in 1, cerratia in 1, Escherichia coli in 1 of total 340 eye specimens. Cultures were found to be
sterile in 6 eyes.
The subjects were divided into groups as males-females, children-adults and premenapausal-menapausal
females and they were stastically analysed with x2 test. There were significant differences between adult and children
groups in term of frequencies of corynebacterium spp. and Staphylococcus epidermidis in favour of adult group
(p<0.01 for Staphylococcus epidermidis and p<0.05 for corynebacterium spp.)
Disc diffusion process was used to determine the anti-microbial sensitivities of isolated microorganisms against
pénicilline, gentamycine, tobramycine, cloramphenicol, tetraycline, bacitracine, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacine
and sulphonamide (co-trimoxasol+trimethoprime). It was found that these microorganisms showed the least
sensitivity againts pénicilline and the most sensitivity against ceftazidime. Keywords: Conjunctival flora, Antibiotic, Conjunctivitis
