IMPRESSION CYTOLOGY IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE DRY EYE
Tear film break up time (BUT), Basal Schlrmer test, Mucus Fern Test and impression cytology were performed on
87 eyes of 44 patients with symptoms of dry eyes and 58 eyes of 29 patient controls. Statistical analysis of data for
specifity and sensitivity were performed on each individual test and their combinations. The highest sensitivity was
determined from BUT and impression cytology 81.6 % and the highest specifity was determined from Basal Schirmer
test 93.1%. The highest sensitivity was determined from the combination of Basal Schirmer plus impression cytology
90.8% and the highest specifity was determined from the combination of Basal Schirmer plus impression cytology
100%. The highest sensitivity (93.1%) and the highest specifity (100%) were determined from the combination of
Basal Schirmer plus BUT plus impression cytology. Impression cytology is the method that its sensitivity and specifity
is higher than the other tests and their combinations.
It has been suggested that the impression cytology which is a simple, repeatable and noninvaziv method, is used
in the diagnosis and control of dry eye.Keywords: Impression cytoloay, dry eye
