We investigated 103 cases with exogenous endophthalmitis retrospectively in order to evaluate the etiology, clinical
findings and prognosis. 61 (59.2%) of these cases were posttraumatic, 31 (30,1%) followed ocular surgery and
11(10,7%) were associated with corneal infection. The time between the onset of symptoms and presentation to the
cilinic was mean 12 days. Systemic and local antibiotic therapy was applied to 54 cases previously. 69 cases underwent
vitreous paracentesis and 9(13,0%) of them had positive vitreous cultures. All patients received topical, subconjunctival
and systemic antibiotics. Additional intravitreal antibiotic therapy was applied to 69 cases in whom vitreous aspiration
was performed. 30(29,1%) patients underwent evisceration, and phtisis developed In 20(19,4%) cases. In 84% of
eviscerated and physical eyes we observed retinal and choroidal pathology in B-scan ultarasonography.
The development of posttraumatic endophthalmitis in 59.2% of exogenous endophthalmitis cases was found to be
an important feature. Late application to the clinic, difficulty in the isolation of the causative microorganism and the
association of retinal and chroidal pathology are the risk factors in the prognosis of exogenous endophthalmitis. Keywords: Exogenous endophthalmitis, Microorganism, B-scan ultrasonography
