THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CLINICAL FINDINGS AND
VISUAL EVOKED CORTICAL POTENTIALS (VER) IN NONPROLIFERATIVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Latencies and amplitudes of visually evoked cortical responses (VER) with flash and pattern stimuli of patients with
non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus were compared with those obtained from healthy controls.
Whilst significant differences were determined in latencies of diabetics without background retinopathy and controls,
no differences were found in amplitudes. Likewise, the latencies of diabetics with and without background diabetic
retinopathy were significantly different, but the amplitudes were not
Althouh increases in latencies and decreases in amplitudes were seen with decreasing visual acuities, significant
differences were found when there were frank differences between visual acuities.
Variable results in some frequency intervals showed that the latency parameter was more sensitive than the
amplitude. Latencies of responses evoked with flash and pattern-reversal stimuli were not different.Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, Visual evoked cortical response.
