CHRONIC HEPATIC FAIULURE
We examined 14 patients with hepatic failure for vitamin A deficiency in Fırat University School of Medicine,
Ophthalmology Department After routine eye examination, we apply tear function tests (tear meniscus, fluoresceine
break-up time and Schirmer test) and conjunctival impression cytology. We calculated Pearson and Spearman correlation
coefficients and found no correlation between tear disfunction level and the period of hepatic failure. The correlation
for conjunctival impression cytology and FBUT was high (r—-0.66, p<0.001). However, schirmer test and conjunctival
impression cytology show little correlation. The correlation for Schirmer test and FBUT was also low. As a conclusion,
FBUT and conjunctival impression cytology thought to be useful in the assessment of vitamin A deficiency. Keywords: Vitamin A deficiency, Hepatic failure, Conjunctival impression cytology
