To evaluate the penetration of ciprofloxacin into the vitreus and subretinal fluid, oral ciprofloxacin was administered
in two doses of 750 mg 12 hours apart to 10 patients who were sheduled to undergo conventional retinal detachment
surgery. Ciprofloxacin levels in the seium, vitreus and subretinal fluid samples taken during the surgery were measured
by the microdilution method. In the patients who underwent vitrectomy mean ciprofloxacin levels were 2.8 ng/ml in the
serum and 0.63 fig/ml in the vitreus samples. In the patienL, who were operated for retinal detachment mean ciprofloxacin
levels were 2.95 ng/ml in the serum and 0.78 ug/rr;/ in the subretinal fluid samples. The vitreus and subretinal fluid
antibiotic levels exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)m of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus
aureus, Gram-negative enteric bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Also antibiotic levels exceeding the (MIC)m
levels of Prophnibacterium acnes were obtained in a considerable number of cases. According to these findings
ciprofloxacin may have a role in the management and prevention of endophthlmitis. Keywords: Oral ciprofloxacin, vitreus, subretinal fluid
