DISPERSION SYNDROME AND PIGMENTARY GLAUCOMA
To examine the lens thickness in eyes with pigment dispersion syndrome and pigmentary glaucoma and to investigate
the role of the lenticular changes caused by accomodation in mechanism of glaucoma.
The lens thickness, anterior chamber depth and axial length of the eyes were determined by using standart A scan
ultrasonography during near accomodation and following cycloplegia in 36 eyes of 20 patients with dispersion syndrome
and 40 eyes of 20 healthy patients.
Following cycloplegia, the mean (±SD) lens thickness was 3.97±0.44 mm in eyes with dispersion syndrome and
3.68*0 27 mm in healthy patients. During accomodation, the mean increase in lens thickness was 0.26+0.08 mm in eyes
with dispersion syndrome, whereas 0.16+0.05 mm in the other group. The differences were statistically significant (using
Student t test) (p<0.001).
Myopia and deeper anterior chambers were shown as predisposing factors in eyes with dispersion syndrome. We
think that the thicker lenses and the increase in thickness during accomodation may be responsible for pigment release
from posterior iris. Keywords: Pigmentary dispersion syndrome, Lens thickness. Pigmentary glaucoma
