Göz Hast. ABD***, Yrd.Dr. Cumhuriyet Ü.T.F. Biyokimya. ABD****, SİVAS In this study, the stabilities of fortified topical antibiotics (Cefazolin, Vancomycin, Gentamicin, Tobramycin) were examined by evaluating the stability of absorbance spectra and pH values. We also examined the effect of storage temperature on these fortified solutions.
Cefazolin (33.3 mg/ml) and Vancomycin (31.2 mg/ml) were prepared by reconstituting the lyophilized powder with 0.9% Sodium chloride and artificial tear. Gentamicin and Tobramycin (13.5 mg/ml) were prepared with adding parenteral form into ophthalmic solution. The samples were preserved at +4oC and +24oC during the 4 weeks of study period, absorbance spectras of gentamicin and tob-ramycin were not changed, however the increases were found in Cefazolin and Vancomycin samples which were preserved at +24oC (p<0.05). pH changes were found between 7 and 10 days of study. In all of the samples preserved at +24oC. However the samples preserved at +4oC, pH change was found in only tobramycin on the 14th day of study (p<0.05).
The results suggest that the storage temperature must be +4oC, if the fortified topical antibiotics would be used more than a week. Keywords: Cefazolin, Vancomycin, Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Drug stability, Fortified topical antibioticsTurkiye Klinikileri J Ophthalmol 1997, 6:14-17
