Glaucoma is an important cause of blindness, characterized by progressive axon loss in the optic nerve head. The early detection of the disease and monitoring progression during the follow-up period is currently less than ideal. Despite quantitative assessment of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness has been accepted as one of the most sensitive methods in early detection and follow-up of glaucoma, currently available techniques provide qualitative or semiquantitative evaluation. In this article, two new imaging techniques, scanning laser polarimeter and optical coherence tomography, which can measure the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness are introduced. The literature on these promising techniques for further advances in the early diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma is reviewed. Keywords: Glaucoma, retinal nerve fiber layer, imaging techniquesTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 1997, 6:45-49
