Herpes simplex virus is a member of family Herpesviridae, which also includes cytomegalovirus, varicella zoster virus, and Epstein-Barr virus. Homo sapiens is the only naturel host of herpes simplex virus, and persons infected with the virus constitute the sole reservoir of infection. Herpes virus infection is a multifaceted disease capable of inducing the most baffling problems through both infectious and immune pathogenetic mechanisms.
