Göz Kliniği, ANKARA The factors affecting the prognosis, the optimum time of surgery and the anatomic and the functional results of 122 eyes (122 patients) for which vitreoretinal surgery was applied in Ankara University Medical Faculty Ophthalmology Department between December 1987 and 1995 were studied.
Modern vitreoretinal surgery method was applied to eyes with various anterior segment and/or vitreoretinal pathology which result from blunt ocular trauma, previously operated penetrating eye injuries and closed globe injury. The cases were followed up in regular intervals for an average of 12 months (range 6 to 48 ) and the prognosis of type of the trauma, the effects of the duration between injury and operation, and the preoperative visual acuity, as well as the effects of various factors present with the trauma (such as retinal detachment, intraocular foreign body, endophthalmitis, vitreous hemorrhage, lens pathology) on prognosis was studied. In addition, the influence of prophylactic scleral buckling and internal tamponade that have been applied during surgery were considered.
80% of the patients were men and the rest are women (20%) with mean age 23 (range 2 to 65). The majority of the cases were in the range of 11 to 25 years. Independent of the type of trauma, the anatomic and functional success rate was 86% in all eyes. The best prognosis was achieved for the closed injuries (94%). Preoperative poor visual acuity, retinal detachment, active endophthalmitis with intraocular foreign body were statistically found to be factors negatively influencing the prognosis of the trauma. It was observed that the period between the trauma and operation did not affect the prognosis. Keywords: Ocular trauma, Vitreo-retinal surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 1997, 6:258-265
