AD, ANKARA Last one thousand patients referred for the first time to the Strabismus Unit of a university ophthalmology department have been retrospectively studied to determine their diagnostic distribution and clinical findings. Although families recognize squint in their children at a mean age of 2.5, mean age at admission to our clinic was 6.4 in esotropia and 12.1 in exotropia patients. This discrepancy bet-ween the onset and admission was recognized to be a major disadvantage in the treatment of amblyopia and in obtaining reasonable binocular vision. The types of strabismus were as the following: Esotropia 56.2% , exotropia 17.7%, thyroid ophthalmopathy 9.5%, 4th nerve palsy 2.8%, Duane’s syndrome 2.8%, 6th nerve palsy 2.3%, Brown syndrome 2.3%, orbital fracture 2.2%, double elevator palsy 1.2%, 3rd nerve palsy 1%, commitant vertical deviation 1%, ocular myasthenia gravis 0.7% and extraocular muscle fibrosis 0.3%. Around 35% of eso- and exotropia patients had associated vertical deviation. Inferior oblique disfunction was seen in 34% of esotropia and 22.6% of exotropia patients while superior oblique dysfunction was seen in 8.6% of esotropia and 18.1% of exotropia patients. Clinically significant alphabetical pattern was seen in 27% of patients. Dissociated vertical deviation was seen in 8.2% of esotropia and exotropia patients. 92% of esotropia patients (62% >+2.0 D as spheric equivalent) and 60% of exotropia patients (45% between +0.25 and +2.0 D as spheric equivalent) were hyperopic. Strabismic amblyopia was seen more frequently in esotropia patients than exotropia patients (p=0.003).Keywords: Strabismus, esotropia, exotropia, alphabethic pattern, oblique muscle disfunction, special ocular motility disorders, thyroid ophthalmopathy, orbital fracture, paralytic strabismus, DVD, ocular myasteniaTurkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 1997, 6:115-118
