The study consisted of 124 patients in whom cataract extraction was performed and continued 6 month follow-up. Palpebral aperture, levator function, height of the upper lid crease were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively. Operations were done under local anesthesia and a superior rectus bridle suture was used in all procedures. Statistical analysis were performed with chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test and Mann Whitney U test.
The incidence of postoperative ptosis was 7.3% at 6 months. There was a significant statistical difference of the preoperative width of the palpebral fissur between the ptosis patients and those without (p<0.05). There was also a significant difference between the mean operative times(p<0.01). The volume of the local anesthetic showed a moderate positive correlation between the ptosis patients and the patients without(p<0.05,r:0.1873).The presence and the degree of ptosis in the first postoperative day shows a significant statistical difference between the ptosis patients and those without (p<0.001).
It was concluded that the development of postcataract ptosis is multifactorial and as most of the ptosis cases resolve in the first six months, it would be necessary to wait at least six months. Keywords: Ptosis, cataract extraction, Aponeurotic defectTurkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 1997, 6:136-139
