Nöroloji AD, MANİSA Giant cell arteritis seen in the elderly population and which involves usually the medium and large arteries is a systemic disease of which complications may be severe. Its usual ophthalmic involvement and symptoms associated with arteries of cranial area are known well. As extracranial involvement is seen occasionally it has been often overlooked. A patient investigated in internal medicine service due to coronary symptoms applied to us with complaint of sudden vision loss in the right eye 2 days after the dischargement from the hospital. Ophthalmic assessment showed anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. By evaluating the anamnesis, signs and results of clinical and laboratory findings, temporal artery biopsy was done with prodiagnosis of possible giant cell arteritis, and biopsy findings confirmed a diagnosis of temporal arteritis. After diagnosis of giant cell arteritis steroid therapy was started and the coronary symptoms of the patient were significantly decreased. It was emphasized that routine ESR may be a clue in the diagnosis since giant cell arteritis might play role as an etiologic factor when coronary ischaemia or infarction was seen in the elderly population. Keywords: Temporal arteritis, Coronary involvement, ESRTurkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 1997, 6:143-147
