Gör., ESKİŞEHİR Pilocarpine gel, which is a combination of pilocarpine HCl and an acrylic vehicle system with a high viscosity, was assessed for its effectiveness in 15 glaucoma patients. Visual acuities of patients previously treated with pilocarpine drops (%2) and timolol maleat 0.5% did not change after pilocarpine gel treatment (p>0.05). Both intraocular pressures (IOP's) and pupil diameters were lower than those obtained after the previous treatment (p<0.01).
Side effects seen with pilocarpine gel have been burning (20%), blurred vision (20%) and accumulation on the lid margin (13.33%). One patient had to quit treatment because of headache (6.67%). Pilocarpine gel is an effective formulation because of its ease of application and its ability to control IOP's. But its side effects may cause difficulty with patient compliance. Keywords: Glaucoma treatment, Pilocarpine gel,
