Göz Kliniği Uzmanı,***** Doç.Dr.,SB Ankara Numune Hastanesi 2.Göz Kliniği Şefi, ANKARA In the hypothyroid state, hyaluronic acid and hydrophilic mucopolysaccharides accumulate in the trabecular meshwork and this causes an obstruction of outflow and elevation of intraocular pressure. Glaucomatous result could reverse with treatment of the hypothyroidism.
To test the hypothesis that there is an association between hypothyroidism and glaucoma, we studied on 25 adults and 22 children, a total of 47 hypothyroid patients. 25 adults, whose thyroid function tests were normal, were chosen for the control group. In the control group, there was no patient with glaucoma; but in the case group, we found three patients with primary open angle glaucoma and one patient with normotensive glaucoma. Two of these patients were newly diagnosed and the other two patients were receiving treatment.
All of the children were receiving treatment and one of them had IOP' s more than 20 mmHg applanation for three times and he is under control. We were not able to find glaucoma in children because they were receiving treatment. But in the adults, hypothyroidism is more insidious and difficult to diagnose. During this retardation, glaucoma may develop.
Patients who have glaucoma should be examined for hypothyroidism and patients who have hypothyroidism should be examined for glaucoma. Keywords: Hypothyroidism, glaucomaTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 1998, 7:80-83
