Conjunctival, corneoscleral rim or both culture results were positive in 45.45% of the patients. Postoperative infection developed in 33.3% of these patients with positive culture results, the postoperative infection rate was 38.9%. Recipient conjunctival cultures were positive in 36.36% of the cases and donor corneoscleral rim cultures were positive in 12.1% of the cases. Staph. epidermidis was the most commonly seen microorganism in the both groups of the cultures.
There was no statistically significant correlation between the positive culture results and development of postoperative infection, but results obtained in preoperative cultures were very helpful in the treatment of serious postoperative infection if ever developed. Keywords: Penetrating keratoplasty,
