The results of automated refractometer before and after cycloplegia; automated refractometer and retinoscopy without cycloplegia; and automated refractometer and retinoscopy with cycloplegia were analysed in each group respectively. Although, on automated refractometer without cycloplegia the spheric component of refraction skewed towards more minus in emmetropic eyes (p<0.0001), this error declined with the use of cycloplegics (p>0.001). Determination of cylindrical component and its axis was found to be reliable. We concluded that the automated refractometers are not so suitable devices for detection of refracitive errors, especially in children and strabismus patients. If it is necessary to use these instruments in refraction, cycloplegia must be applied. Keywords: Automated refractometer, Retinoscopy,
