Twenty patients with persistent corneal epithelial defect who were inserted collagen shields (CS), in the period of 1993-1996 in Cumhuriyet University School of Medicine Ophthalmology department, were evaluated in the study. In 17 (85%) of 20 patients, epithelial defects completely healed in the first 48 hours. In 3 patients (15%), although the lesion was still persisting, area of epithelial defect was smaller than it has been before treatment. Applying CS twice to 2 of these 3 persistent cases and three times to remainder persistent one case, lesions completely healed. There were no complication assigned from lenses in any applying CS.
We concluded that application of CS in the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects was a suitable and an alternative therapy method. Keywords: Collagen shield, Corneal diseases,
