The formation of the posterior capsule opasification overshadowed to the success of the surgery. This complication is dependent on many factors. The effect of the method of the capsulotomy to the posterior capsule opacification are also known.
To determine the effect of the anterior capsulotomy to the posterior capsule opacification; 198 patients who were operated of planned extracapsular cataract extraction (PECCE) in the bag intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in Ondokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty, Department of Ophthalmology between February 1991-November 1996 period were examined retrospectively. Patients who were implanted Poly Methyl Metacrilat (PMMA) lenses and heparin surface modified PMMA lenses were separated into 2 groups for envelope capsulotomy and continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis. The groups were evaluated individually. Patients were followed 3-48 months (mean 34) and in 37 eyes (%18.7) posterior capsule opacifications developed.
Posterior capsule opacification was seen in 23 of 94 eyes (%24.5) who had a envelope capsulotomy, posterior capsule opacification was seen in 14 of 104 eyes (%13.5) who had a CCC capsulotomy.
As a result, posterior capsule opacification was found evidently less in the patients who had a anterior capsulotomy with the methods of CCC (P<0.05).Keywords: Posterior capsule opacification,
