The patients treated with panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) were divided into three groups: Group I: eyes with high risk characteristics, Group II: eyes with proliferation but without high risk characteristics and Group III: eyes with severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy. The difference in visual acuity changes after PRP between the groups was not statistically significant (f=3.43, p>0.05). Overall 21-34% of the patients experienced increase in vision, 34-38% experienced decrease in vision and 27-40% had no change in vision. In high risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy, disk neovascularization disappeared in 51% of the patients, regressed in 26%, and progressed or did not change in 23%. The most important problems causing two or more lines of visual loss after PRP were macular edema and vitreal hemorrhage. Keywords: Diabetes, laser, photocoagulation,
