* Prof.Dr.,Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD,** Dr.,Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD, The evaluation and follow-up of Memory lens (thermoplastic consistency foldable intraocular lenses for small incisions) implanted cases after cataract surgery with phacoemulsification was aimed.
Memory lenses were implanted in 208 cases after cataract surgery with phacemulsification. Patients were seen on the 1st day, 3rd and 6th months for follow-up visits. Complications during the surgery, best corrected visual acuity after surgery (BCVA), intraocular lens decentralization and posterior capsule opacification were recorded. Mean follow-up period was 10 (6-18) months.
Difficulty in the opening of the bottle cap due to freezing of the special carrier media and premature unfolding of the lens were the main problems seen during lens implantation. Visual acuity was 0.1-0.3 in 4 cases (1.9%), 0.4-0.7 in 79 cases (38.0%) and 0.8 - 1.0 in 125 cases (60.1%) on the first postoperative day. BCVAs were measured as 0.1-0.3 in 1 case (0.5%), 0.4-0.7 in 15 cases (7.2%) and 0.8-1.0 in 192 cases (92.3%) on the third and sixth months controls. After exclusion of the combined procedures, 167 cases (98.9%) had BCVA of 0.8-1.0. Posterior capsule opacification was seen in 2 cases and retinal detachment developed in 1 case one month after surgery. Lens decentralization was seen in none of the cases.
Memory lenses are good choices for implantation through small incisions after phacoemulsification surgery except unremarkable problems during implantation. Memory lenses need no special forceps for implantation, has no decentralization problems, has low incidence of secondary cataract and in cases with ruptured posterior capsule or zonular dialysis there is the possibility of sulcus fixation. Keywords: Phacoemulsification, Memory Lens,
