They constitute about 10% of children blindness and cause an important social problem. Congenital cataracts are reported to be genetically determined by 30% and this kind of cataract may express itself as zonular pulverulent cataract. Many diverse etiologies such as metabolic, infectious causes and syndromes can result in congenital catarats. Congenital rubellosis is the most common enfectious cause of congenital cataracts. Galactosemia is the most commonly encountered metabolic disease associated with congenital cataracts. Classification of congenital cataracts are based mainly on the morphologic structure. Zonular, polar, capsular, membranous and total cataracts are morphologic types of congenital cataracts. Congenital polar cataracts are frequently associated with ocular and systemic diseases. Early surgical intervention and appropriate rehabilitation is required for dense cataract. This article is about etiology and types of congenial cataracts. Keywords: Congenital cataracts, Lens, Embryology,
