Trabeculectomy operation was performed with intraoperative MMC application to 46 eyes of 44 patients with high risk glaucoma. Mean age was 40.4 (between 1-80 years of age), and mean follow-up period was 27.5 months (range 1-6 years). Surgery was performed with standard limbus based trabeculectomy technique. MMC solution was absorbed to a small surgical sponge and applied beneath the scleral flap for 5 minutes.
Application of trabeculectomy combined with MMC was found to be successful at 36 of 46 eyes (78.3%) after 27.5 months of follow-up. Mean IOP decrease of the study grup was; 21.3±6.8 mmHg in the succesful cases, and 9.1±0.75 mmHg in the unsuccesful cases. At preoperative period, 2.6 (mean) medication was needed but this ratio was decreased to 0.82 at the end of the follow-up period.
It was determined that, trabeculectomy combined with MMC application increases the success in cases which the chance of success is low with standard trabeculectomy, and the complications were seen more rarely. Keywords: Trabeculectomy, Glaucoma surgery,
