to evaluate the effects of cataract surgery on intraocular pressure (IOP) in the short and long terms in eyes with pseudaexfoliation.
Eighty eyes with pseudaexfoliation (58 eyes with pseudaexfoliation syndrome -PES- and 22 eyes with pseudaexfoliative glaucoma -PES-)and 56 eyes with senile cataract underwent cataract operation. Postoperative IOP levels, the causes of IOP elevation and their treatment modalities were compared.
The short-term IOP elevation was commonly observed in eyes with PES (17%) and PEG (23%) than the eyes with senile cataract (5%) (p< 0.05). The presence of glaucoma in preoperative period was not an extra risk factor for IOP elevation in early postoperative period in eyes with pseudaexfoliation. Preoperative IOP and need of antiglaucomatous medication were significantly decreased after cataract operation in PEG on the long-term follow-up.
Due to relatively common intraoperative complications during cataract operation in eyes with pseudaexfoliation, IOP levels should be carefully followed-up. The eyes with PEG responds well to antiglaucomatous medication on the preoperative term, the cataract operation may lower the IOP and need of antiglaucomatous medications on the late postoperative period.
