The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of vertical phoria in normal children. A total of 247 school children aged 7-12 years were evaluated. Only the cooperative children with normal visual acuity and ocular motility examination were included in the study.
Vertical phoria was tested by Maddox rod and vertical fusional amplitudes were measured by bar prism. Thirty-five children showed 1 prism diopter (PD) and 6 children showed 2 PD of vertical phoria. The mean value of vertical fusional amplitude was 3.8±1.5 PD. Vertical fusional amplitude values of 41 children with vertical phoria did not reveal any significant difference when compared with normals (t= 1.56 P= 0.12).
In our study group of normal primary school children vertical phoria was present in 17% , all asymptomatic and not more than 2 PD. Vertical phoria measurement is an integral part of the orthoptic examination especially in children with reading difficulties. Keywords: Vertical hyperphoria, Vertical fusion amplitude,
