40 eyes of the 20 patients were included in this study. Patients were divided into two equal groups; group I used only betaxolol and group II used only pilocarpine. After 1 year, pretreatment and posttreatment results of visual acuity, vertical cup/disc, intraocular pressure (IOP), computerized perimetry, color Doppler ultrasonography results were compared.
There were no difference between two groups before and after 1 year treatment in visual acuity, vertical c/d ratio. The IOP decrease in betaxolol group was -1.14±2.03 mmHg; and in pilocarpine group was -2.58±2.61 mmHg (in turn: p<0.01, p<0.05). After 1 year treatment; in betaxolol group ophthalmic artery (OA) resistive index (RI) decreased from 0.68±0.06 to 0.65±0.07; in pilocarpine group OA RI decreased from 0.75±0.07 to 0.70±0.09 (for betaxolol and pilocarpine groups p<0.01). In both groups there were no significant difference between pretreatment and posttreatment reliability indexes of computerized perimetry. In betaxolol group there was a significant increase in (-) mean deviation (-MD) and corrected pattern standard deviation (CPSD) values after 1 year treatment (pre-treatment and post-treatment; -MD: 6.76±4.63 dB and 5.02±2.83 dB; CPSD: 4.90±3.01 db and 3.57±2.17 dB) (-MD p<0.05, CPSD p<0.01). In pilocarpine group short gluctuation decreased from 2.81±1.06 dB to 2.36±0.79 dB after 1 year treatment (p<0.05).
In normal tension glaucoma patients betaxolol and pilocarpine caused decrease in OA RI and increase in some visual field parameters. Keywords: Normal tension glaucoma, Betaxolol, Pilocarpine,
