This study was planned to compare early results of botulinum injection and traditional strabismus surgery for treatment of patients with nonparalytic squint.
Improvement and success rates of deviations in posttreatment three months of surgery / injection were compared for evaluating the results of 42 patients injected botulinum once and 50 patients have taken just one recession-resection surgery on their horizontal muscles. Patients with esotropia and exotropia in each group were compared with each other in re spect of success and improvement rates.
In non-paralytic strabismus, improvement and success rates with only one strabismus surgery were found more successful than those with botulinum injected, but in patients with small angle deviation, success rates were found same in both treatment groups. Patients with esotropia were more responsive to botulinum injection than those with exotropia, but there were no difference between two treatment methods for esotropic patients. Treatment with botulinum injection gave good results in patients with small angle deviations, and traditional strabismus surgery was more appropriate treatment in cases where the deviations large.
Although there is no difference between these two treatment methods for patients with initial small angle deviations, surgery must be preferable treatment method for patients with large angle deviations. Botulinum toxin injection must be kept in mind as a method reducing quantity of deviation or as a good alternative treatment method for conventional strabismus surgery in selected cases according to the clinical and social characteristics of patients.
